" 'Quality control is not a test; it is a way of life.' This is the credo of Mammography Quality Control: The Why and How Book, written by Calvin P. Myers. PhD, and published by Medical Physics Publishing. Our American College of Radiology (ACR) manual instructs mammography technologists how to perform the eleven QC tests; Dr. Myers' book tells us how to fix the QC tests when things go wrong.

"Why does a book like this need to be written? Myers notes that in his nationwide seminars, he is frequently asked the same questions. This book is a compilation of those questions and discussions with his audiences regarding the chronically misapplied and misunderstood information that mammography technologists use to attempt to correct out-of-control QC data.

"Myers does caution, however, that this book is not a substitute for the ACR Manual, but rather an adjunct to it. His objective, he states in the introduction, is to explain the reasons for the QC test. 'If you understand these reasons, you will find the ACR Manual easier to understand, the tests will make sense and be easier to do, and you will have less trouble deciding what to do if the test results are unsatisfactory.'

"This forty-page book consists of 100 questions and answers and is organized into nine sections for fast, easy reference to solve your quality control crisis. The table of contents can pinpoint precisely where you should go for your particular concern. I find the Q & A format much more interesting, direct and helpful than a standard textbook in which you must read through several chapters to locate all the relevant information required to solve a pressing dilemma. With Myers' book, just find the question that is similar to your situation and follow his advice. This book helps you think logically about how to correct the problems. His advice ranges from the seven reasons to call a physicist, to various questions addressing processor quality control charts, to crossover concerns, and a final chapter on 'Loose Ends.' He addresses image quality and other MQSA quality control tests. His emphasis is on maintaining QC consistency to ensure low-dose/high-quality mammograms and on eliminating all the possible situations that might require a repeat film--hence, increased exposure to the client.

"Buy this nifty reference book and place it next to your ACR Manual. Guess which one you will use more frequently?"
